Flor De La Playa Wedding, Sayulita | Katie & Paul

Before 2020 came screaming to a halt, the year started off incredibly. I am so beyond thankful to have had these moments, even more so now than before. I was given the opportunity to photograph this colourful destination wedding on the 1st of February. I was introduced to Katie and Paul when I photographed her sisters Whistler wedding a few years ago. These two had made Whistler home for many years before moving to Toronto. They chose to have a Flor De La Playa Wedding, an incredible spanish styled venue right on the beach in Sayulita Mexico.

The day started with the groomsmen all surfing. I wasn’t there to photograph that portion, as I too was partaking in the same activity at another beach. I met them at Flor de La Playa where they shared some high quality tequila shots in preparation for the unfolding events.

The girls got ready at the house next door. They were calm, and had a very relaxed vibe about them.

Katie & Paul chose to have a first look on the beach, followed by a trip to downtown Sayulita for some portraits on the colourful streets. This town is full of cobblestone roads lined with artisan shops and cute little restaurants and it is incredibly busy. You have to be quick when taking photos on those streets. Parking was hard to find so we’d quickly pull up to a no parking zone, jump out and quickly grab a few snaps before we were issued a ticket or the traffic caught up to us. Golf cart photo bombs are definitely a common encounter here.

We made our way back to Flor De La Playa for the wedding ceremony. Paul’s twin brother officiated the wedding which was awesome. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t know he had a twin and definitely thought he was Paul when I first arrived.

The wedding reception was SO much fun. I knew a lot of the guests from Whistler which I was thrilled about. Far more than I thought I would have known. Margaritas and tequila shots were flowing and the DJ kept the dance floor full the whole night. Although I was off the clock at 9, I stayed and shut it down with everyone, because why the hell not?!
