Escaping to the Ocean | Pacific Rim

Learning this year more than ever, that taking time for yourself is not only important, it is incredibly necessary for your sanity. Living and working in Whistler can be hectic to say the least. With the growing numbers of tourism, that ultimately pays your bills, it also is getting so busy, that there is hardly a lull in seasons. The ‘off seasons’ are no longer slow, and the peak seasons are, well they are just busy. About mid way through winter, I start to feel the need to get out. After just over a year of not returning to Tofino (unheard of for me), I quickly booked a trip in panic mode, to escape the crowds of Whistler, and return to a place that is so dear to my heart, that it almost skips a beat when I reach the intersection that splits to Ukee and Tofino. Escaping to the ocean, to the Pacific Rim.

Tofino has exponentially grown since I lived there too. Trying to find parking at Long Beach, restaurants jam packed, waiting 45 minutes for your burrito at Tacofino in February makes you realize how much tourism has grown in what were typically quiet winter months. But then the weekend ends, and it returns to it’s quieter self. We stayed right on Chestermans beach, where each morning we would enjoy our coffees steps away from our place. Our dogs were as happy as they get. Pulling on your wetsuit and walking 100 meters to the waters edge, you just cannot beat the location. Blessed with mostly sunshine, we lucked out. My rain gear untouched, and the saying “there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing”, was never once said. Ultimately a week of full on relaxation mode, just what was needed.

Learning more than ever that life isn’t about all work no play. Make the time, after all, we only live once.
